The Center for Shelter Medicine is the first of it's kind in California. As a progressive animal shelter, San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) provides shelter animals with varying ranges of veterinary care, diagnosis and treatment. Few shelters, however, offer full veterinary services including specialty surgeries, orthopedics, dentistry and radiology.
Also acting as a teaching hospital offering the only Shelter Medicine Internship program in California, this space was designed to enhance the operations of the staff and improve the care and healing process for the animals through thoughtful design.
Working closely with the SDHS team and our build partner we transformed the existing medical wing of the building into a world class facility that will care for more than 40,000 shelter animals annually.
