Firehouse Magazine Announces Station Design Award Winners
Firehouse Magazine has announced the winners of its sixth annual Station Design Awards program, which recognizes outstanding architecture and design from fire departments nationwide.
Garden Grove Fire Station 6 won Gold in the Career 2 Fire Station (stations under 15,000 square feet) category.
San Diego County Fire Station 44 received a Career 2 (stations under 15,000 square feet) Notable award.
“The Station Design Awards brings the best in fire station and training facility designs and renovations to departments across the country and helps our readers prepare and plan for these long-term projects that become the center of the community for decades ,” said Peter Matthews, editor-in-chief of Firehouse Magazine. “The awards allow our readers to be aware of the latest trends and concept that have been vetted by architects and fire department officials.”
Janet Wilmoth, special projects director for Firehouse, noted that the typical fire station has changed significantly over the past 25 years due to the increased responsibilities on fire departments across North America: “The judging of this year’s 54 entries was very difficult for the judges because the commitment to safety and health in the station is obvious in most of the entries. Fire departments are more proactive in designing healthier environments and restricting toxins and carcinogens returning on firefighters and in the stations. Every one of this year’s entries is a winner for its personnel and community they serve.”
Winners were selected by a panel of seven judges, including a fire chief, a fire chief/architect, a fire engineer/architect and four architects specialized in fire station designs.
